Adaptive yoga for individuals with upper limb differences

Adaptive exercises play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with upper limb differences. Adaptive yoga, for example, will not only improve physical strength and flexibility but will also boost mental wellbeing and self-confidence. To gain deeper insights, we interviewed TASKA Champion Melanie Waldman, an experienced adaptive yoga teacher who has been pioneering in this field.

Adaptive yoga offers numerous physical and mental benefits for individuals with upper limb differences. Physically, it helps improve strength, flexibility, and coordination. Mentally, it provides stress relief, enhances mindfulness, and boosts self-esteem. By focusing on breath control, individuals can maintain overall wellness. Melanie explains that unlike traditional yoga, which often emphasises physical poses, adaptive yoga focuses on the connection within oneself. “A yogic connection starts within oneself, so a great place to start is controlling your breath in order to control your nerve centers.” This internal focus is particularly beneficial for individuals who require minimal physical strain while maintaining inner peace and stability.

Melanie began practicing yoga at age 15. Her love for yoga was sparked at a summer camp where she witnessed the effect yoga had on children. “I was stunned by the ‘magic’ of their peace following a class session. I have been hooked, ever since!” Her journey took a profound turn at age 22 when she lost her arm due to medical trauma. During her recovery, meditation became a pivotal part of her healing process, helping her to understand that life continues despite significant changes.

Today, she uses her experiences to guide others with disabilities in the fitness space. Her goal is to introduce people with disabilities to accessible fitness practices, emphasising the importance of community and support.

Adapting yoga poses often require the use of props. Melanie finds foam blocks placed on top of solid cork blocks particularly useful. These props can be adjusted to support various poses, making yoga more accessible and achievable. “From this, I’ve adapted to a point where the blocks extend almost the same length, close enough to the point where any pose is possible!” she says.

When designing yoga sessions, Melanie emphasises the power of community and the importance of breath. She believes that yoga is more than just physical poses (asanas); it is about connecting with oneself and others through controlled breathing. Whether you are new to yoga or looking to adapt your practice, remember that the journey begins within, with a single breath.
